Södersjukhuset operates a virtually all-encompassing cardiological clinic, capable of catering to the needs of patients suffering from all types of heart disease. The focus is on emergency care and the department includes an intensive medical care unit.

Patients are in the majority of cases admitted from the emergency ward. Every year, the department take care of about 1000 patients with acute myocardial infarction. Patients suffering from heart failure and arrhythmia also receive treatment here. The aim is that every patient with heart disease should be fully treated and cared for at Södersjukhuset.

The high volume of patients offers unique opportunities for research in the field of cardiology. One area afforded special attention is the period prior to the patient’s actual arrival at the hospital, the pre-hospital care. The Cardiology department in collaberation with Karolinska Institutet have several on-goning projects, involving a number of PhD-students.
