Welcome to postnatal care! Checklist
As new parents, you have different circumstances and different needs prior to discharge from the Maternity Clinic (BB). The time you spend in hospital is individual, ranging from six hours to a few days. It is your needs that determine your inpatient time.
After you have given birth, the following criteria must be met prior to discharge
- Your bleeding is normal
- You can pass urine as normal
- You have received information on pain relief
- You have received information about tears/cuts/surgical wounds and signs of infection
- You have received information on breastfeeding, expressing milk manually and feeding your baby
- You feel confident about where to ask questions about you and your child
For your newborn baby, the following criteria must be met prior to discharge
- Your baby has been nursing or feeding is going according to plan and there is a plan for nursing/feeding your baby, until your next contact with the ward
- Your baby has been examined by a paediatrician
You have received information about your newborn’s breathing, 24-hour routine, skin colour and jaundice in newborns - An appointment for a return visit has been made or PKU sampling has been performed
Remember that you are responsible for the following visits
- A hearing screening must be performed from three days of age to within 14 days of your baby’s birth. Drop-in at Sös Mon-Fri 09.00-15.30, closed for lunch 12.00-13.00
- Book your first visit to the BVC as soon as possible after birth
- Book postnatal visits with your midwife at the Midwife Clinic
