Increased PrEP-pricing

During the spring and summer of 2026, the price of PrEP (emtricitabine/tenofovir disoproxil) has increased sharply in Sweden. This is not because Venhälsan or Region Stockholm has increased the price, and unfortunately it is not something we have been able to influence. During 2026, the price has risen dramatically from around SEK 300 to more than SEK 2,000 for a pack of 30 tablets.

What does this mean for you?

PrEP is still included in the Swedish pharmaceutical benefits scheme and is covered by the national high-cost protection system. The maximum out-of-pocket cost for prescription medicines is SEK 3,800 per year. For many patients, the personal cost will therefore remain limited.

What is Venhälsan doing?

We are monitoring the situation closely and have raised the issue with the responsible authorities and other relevant organisations.

Can I receive a different medicine?

No. There are currently no alternative PrEP medicines available in Sweden. Emtricitabine/tenofovir disoproxil is the only medicine currently used for PrEP in Sweden. Other PrEP medicines have been approved in some countries, but they are not used for PrEP in Sweden and are also more expensive.

Should I continue taking PrEP?

Yes. If you have been prescribed PrEP, you should continue taking it as directed. Do not stop taking PrEP because of the current price increase without first discussing it with your healthcare provider.
