Long acting injectable PrEP
We receive many questions about PrEP given as injections instead of tablets. There are currently two long-acting injectable medicines for PrEP: lenacapavir, which is administered every six months, and cabotegravir, which is administered every two months.
Most of the questions we receive concern lenacapavir, which has recently been approved for PrEP in the European Union under the brand name Yeytuo (marketed in the United States as Yeztugo). Cabotegravir has also been approved in the European Union for PrEP.
At present, neither of these medicines is used for PrEP in Sweden. The list price of Yeztugo in the United States is approximately USD 28,000 per year, although the actual cost often varies depending on individual insurance coverage.
We do not yet know when injectable PrEP will become available in Sweden or what the price will be. We will update this page as soon as more information becomes available. Until then, emtricitabine/tenofovir disoproxil remains the recommended and only established PrEP treatment in Sweden.
